Tony Awards recap

The Tonys are an annual awards celebration honoring achievement on Broadway.  Nomination categories include Best Musical, Choreography, Lighting Design, Costuming, Leading Actor/Actress, Score, Direction, and more.  This year’s 72ndAnnual Tony Awards were hosted by Josh Groban and Sara Bareilles at the legendary Radio City Music Hall in New York.  Didn’t get to watch this year’s Tony Awards? Here’s what you missed…

  • Hosts, Groban and Bareilles, performed a hysterical original song to open the show. The duet honored all the “losers” of the Tonys—which, funny enough, included both of them (Groban starred in NATASHA, PIERRE, AND THE GREAT COMET OF 1812 and Bareilles composed WAITRESS, and, while both were nominated, lost in their respective categories).
  • Acclaimed Broadway dancer, Chita Rivera, was recognized for her Lifetime Achievement in Theater. Miss Rivera starred in musicals like CHICAGO, NINE, BYE BYE BIRDIE, KISS OF THE SPIDERWOMAN, CHITA RIVERA: A DANCER’S LIFE, and SWEET CHARITY. Renowned composer, Andrew Lloyd Weber, also received a Lifetime Achieve Award for his work on such iconic shows as EVITA, CATS, SCHOOL OF ROCK, JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR, and PHANTOM OF THE OPERA.
  • Broadway newcomer, Justin Peck, took home the Tony Award for Best Choreography in a musical. Coming from New York City Ballet, Peck choreographed the revival of CAROUSEL with technical virtuosity and impeccable storytelling through movement.
  • MEAN GIRLS, SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS, CAROUSEL, MY FAIR LADY, FROZEN, and ONCE ON THIS ISLAND all performed dance numbers on the Great Stage. The variety of choreography featured everything from tap, jazz, and ballet to can-can, hip-hop, and Afro-Cuban movement.
  • The most moving performance of the evening featured drama students from the Marjory Stoneman Douglass High School in Parkland, Florida singing “Seasons of Love” from RENT.
  • Best Featured Actress in a Musical winner, Lindsay Mendez (CAROUSEL), said, “Be your true self and the world will take note.” When she started her career, Mendez was encouraged to change her last name to “Matthews.”  Her big win proved that staying true to yourself is your greatest power.
  • THE BAND’S VISIT took home a whopping 10 Tony Awards including Best Musical.
